Our Story
The Downtown Norfolk Community Garden was established in 2021 to serve the diverse population of Downtown Norfolk. Its mission is to cultivate both produce and community by utilizing high-density, raised bed gardening and ensuring access to all members of our vibrant urban community. Located on the property of Freemason Street Baptist Church, the garden was created through a collaboration between the church, the Downtown Norfolk Civic League, and Norfolk Master Gardeners.
Before the garden’s creation, Norfolk had many public spaces but lacked a community garden in the heart of Downtown. This project was designed to revitalize a vacant city lot and transform it into a living, vibrant community space.
As a mixed-community garden, we welcome all individuals, regardless of their gardening background or experience. We believe anyone can learn to garden! Not only does gardening provide a means to grow affordable fruits and vegetables, but it also offers a meaningful way to give back to the community.
